AirAsia Scraps Baggage Fees For Surfboards Following WSL Deal

AirAsia and the World Surf League announced their partnership during an event on Saturday.WSL

AirAsia Owner Tony Fernandes made the decision to "scrap dreaded extra baggage fees for surfboards with his airline" after announcing a partnership with the World Surf League and Surfing Australia in Coolangatta, according to Nicholas McElroy of the GOLD COAST BULLETIN. Fernandes said, "It's for all surfers, for all surfers, yeah, not just professional surfers but all surfers. We're going to get rid of it -- I just came up with it and my commercial team doesn't know about it -- that's the advantage of owning an airline." Fernandes, the majority shareholder of League Championship side Queens Park Rangers, said that he "had a soft spot for the Gold Coast and surfing, since a brief stint working as a teacher in the city." He added that the sponsorship deal between the WSL and Surfing Australia would support local events and the Fingal-based indigenous Jurakai Surf Culture program (GOLD COAST BULLETIN, 3/18).
