Wales In Line For £1M Check For Playing In China Cup

Welsh football is in line for a £1M ($1.4M) payday by playing in the Far East next month -- "but only if Gareth Bale features," according to Laurie Whitwell of the London DAILY MAIL. The Welsh FA will "bank the seven-figure sum tax free for competing in the China Cup" during the March int'l break. Should Bale be unable to appear, the total will be reduced by £100,000 ($139,938). Terms also include a £50,000 ($69,969) penalty clause if Aaron Ramsey "does not show." Multiple sources indicated that all squad members are "eager to play" in the first game of Ryan Giggs' tenure as manager, and Wales expects Bale and Ramsey to "fly out if fit." The potential presence of Welsh football's "star figures" played a "big part in China extending an invitation to the country." Bale and Ramsey were named specifically when the tournament was announced last November (DAILY MAIL, 2/19).
