League Notes: F1's Halo Could Provide Commercial Opportunities

Integrating the Halo into the '18 Formula 1 chassis "has proved challenging for teams but will provide additional commercial opportunities." F1 is analyzing a series of "experimental solutions" to maximize the extra space created by the Halo's introduction. One of those solutions is a scrolling digital ticker, "like the LED versions which are used to display the latest stocks and share prices" (MOTORSPORT, 1/10).

The Marylebone Cricket Club World Cricket Committee called for the adoption of standardized methods of measuring temperature and confirmed that in extreme heat, umpires are "empowered to take the players off the field." It comes after cricketer Joe Root was taken to hospital "suffering from severe dehydration after spending almost the whole of Sunday on the field during the fifth Ashes Test" (London TELEGRAPH, 1/10).

Australia's women's rugby union team will be paid for test matches for the first time under a new collective bargaining agreement. In "another boost for the women's game," professional sevens players' base pay has been "raised to a similar level to their male XV-a-side colleagues." The deal "may allay some concerns about the treatment of female players by Rugby Australia," which admitted late last year it would not pay players in next year's national women's XV competition (Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH, 1/9).

The 2019 Rugby World Cup organizing committee revealed "the types of tickets that will be available as well as the periods for the priority lottery sales for the tournament" on Wednesday. Regular ticket prices range from 1,000 yuan ($153.65), which is the sum for children, to 100,000 yuan ($15,365) (JAPAN TIMES, 1/10).
