Harry Kane's 39th Goal Gives Him Premier League Record For Most In A Calendar Year

Tottenham striker Harry Kane surpassed Alan Shearer's record for Premier League goals in a calendar year with a hat trick in Tuesday's 5-2 win over Southampton, according to the BBC. He scored 39 top-flight goals in '17 and 56 in all competitions, including England games, "making him the top scorer in Europe for club and country." Kane: "It's been a fantastic year." Kane's hat trick -- "just three days after a treble against Burnley" -- meant he will end '17 with two more goals than Lionel Messi scored for Argentina and Barcelona and three more than Cristiano Ronaldo's tally for Portugal and Real Madrid. Kane's statistics this year "show that he can be ruthless at any point in a game." His "most fruitful spell has come between 46 and 60 minutes, when he has scored eight Premier League goals," but he has netted seven in the opening quarter and six across the other 15-minute periods (BBC, 12/26).
