Overwatch Contenders Korea To Be Broadcast In Country On MBC

Blizzard Entertainment reportedly will broadcast the upcoming Overwatch Contenders Korea via Korean sports broadcaster MBC, "a snub to the league's founding network, OnGameNet," according to Ferguson Mitchell of THE ESPORTS OBSERVER. MBC, which "shut down its gaming channel" in '12, "could be returning to form in esports with one of the biggest regional Overwatch leagues in the world." According to Sports Chosun, MBC's gaming channel is not coming back -- rather, "a small number of production personnel" that worked at the old MBC gaming channel have been incorporated into MBC's Sport Plus 2 channel. Blizzard was reportedly seeking "a considerable amount" of money in exchange for the exclusive broadcast rights of Contenders Korea. The news is a "big loss to OGN." The broadcaster launched APEX last May and held four full seasons of Overwatch APEX. This also is not the "first big hit" OGN has taken as of late. Last month, it was reported that Riot Games was taking over the broadcasting of League of Legends Champions Korea, which OGN had run since '12 (THE ESPORTS OBSERVER, 12/22).
