Finance Notes: Sports Direct Shareholders Block £11M Payout To Founder's Brother

Sports Direct's shareholders voted to block an £11M ($14.7M) payout to Founder Mike Ashley's brother. Ashley asked the rest of its backers to approve the sum after a review found John Ashley was "owed millions in unpaid incentives" dating from '07. However, around 71% voted against the proposal (London TELEGRAPH, 12/13).

High Performance Sport New Zealand "made some tweaks" to its funding allocations for next year. Cycling is the "biggest winner," given a NZ$200,000 ($140,274) "bump" from the NZ$4.2M it received in '17. Cycling "sits behind only rowing" -- NZ$5.1M ($3.6M) -- in terms of investment for '18, with yachting -- NZ$3.8M ($2.7M) -- and athletics -- NZ$2.7M ($1.9M) -- seeing their funding levels stay constant for next year. Cycling New Zealand and Canoe Sprint New Zealand had their core investment extended until '20 (NEW ZEALAND HERALD, 12/13).

Cricket scoring company CricHQ was sold to a group of New Zealand investors. Receivers Neale Jackson and Brendon Gibson, of KordaMentha, confirmed the sale of the company's business and assets on Wednesday. They would "not say how much the investors paid for it, or who the investors were." The Wellington-based firm "appeared to be taking the cricketing world by storm before its collapse earlier this year" (STUFF, 12/13).
