Olympic Notes: IOC Stops Payments To AIBA Over Governance Issues

The IOC on Wednesday said that it would not make any payments to the Int'l Boxing Federation (AIBA) "until problems over governance and finances are sorted out." AIBA has been "riven with in-fighting for months," with former President C.K. Wu provisionally suspended before stepping down in November after a "bitter dispute" with his exec committee. IOC President Thomas Bach said, "We have asked AIBA for a full report by the end of January" (REUTERS, 12/6).

The Tokyo 2020 organizing committee confirmed that it shortlisted three mascot design sets for the Games. Each design set contains one mascot for the Olympic Games and one for the Paralympic Games. The mascot selection panel reviewed no less than 2,042 entries submitted by the public as part of an open competition (IOC).

The two mascots for the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics will walk across central Washington, DC, this week to promote the upcoming Games, the organizer said Wednesday. Soohorang, a white tiger, and Bandabi, an Asiatic black bear, "plan to meet with locals near the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and the National Mall" starting at 1:30pm Saturday, according to the Korean Cultural Center (YONHAP, 12/7).
