Atlético Madrid Could Lose Up To €25M After Elimination From Champions League

A "certain combination of results" was needed for Atlético Madrid to advance to the last 16 of the Champions League and, the "financial damage" from the club's elimination might rise" to €25M ($29.5M), according to MARCA. The club needed to beat Chelsea and hope that AS Roma lost to Qarabag. Elimination from the Champions League following Tuesday's draw forces Atlético to "adapt to Europa League's financial structure." While the club would have earned €6M ($7.1M) for its qualification to the last 16 of the Champions League, a "similar achievement in the Europa League" will only bring in €500,000 ($590,400). Adding up the market pool and ticket profits, "elimination might cost Atleti as much as" €25M in total (MARCA, 12/5).
