Queen's Park Challenges Scottish FA's Hampden Cost Claims

Scottish League One side Queen's Park challenged the Scottish FA to justify its claim that retaining Hampden Park as the national stadium would cost "many millions," according to the BBC. The club, which owns the stadium, said, "We have to date had no detailed access to any evidence to substantiate this statement." It wants the SFA to "reveal the comparative cost of leaving Hampden." The governing body is "considering alternatives" before its current lease expires in '20. An SFA delegation this month visited the national rugby stadium, Murrayfield in Edinburgh, which recently hosted Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian's home games, "amid discussions with Scottish Rugby." It has also received proposals from Celtic and Rangers. Queen's Park said that comments made by SFA CEO Stewart Regan caused it "great concern." The club said in a statement that it "would seek confirmation from the Scottish FA that they have fulfilled their responsibilities, under the present lease, to maintain the stadium." Regan said that the SFA was "exploring the pros and cons of leaving Hampden but that staying would require external funding from public and private bodies." Queen's Park responded by suggesting that Hampden Park is "an economic asset to Glasgow and Scotland" (BBC, 11/21). SKY SPORTS' Lyall Thomas wrote Queen's Park "refuted reports" that it charges the SFA £800,000 ($1.06M) per year for the lease (SKY SPORTS, 11/21).
