Finance Notes: ManU Manager José Mourinho Remains Under Investigation For Tax Fraud

ManU Manager José Mourinho "remains under investigation for alleged tax fraud despite declaring the case brought against him to be closed." He said that he "accepted the arguments put forward by Spain’s Inland Revenue and paid the fee demanded to settle charges brought against him, which he has always denied." Mourinho insisted that the "only problem he had with the brief appearance was that he had been forced to reschedule training." A court spokesperson said that Mourinho "remained under official investigation" (London GUARDIAN, 11/3).

Former Serie A club Modena was declared bankrupt, "ending 105 years" of its history. It is a "sad end" for the team, which was "locked out of the Stadio Braglia for non-payment of bills," and has not attended the last three Serie C games (FOOTBALL ITALIA, 11/5).

Pure Gym, the "low-cost" U.K. fitness chain, was "snapped up" by a U.S. private equity group in a deal that values the business at £600M ($784.7M). Leonard Green & Partners of L.A. bought majority ownership of the largest U.K. gym chain by membership from CCMP Capital, the British buyout house. The sale comes just over a year after Pure Gym, whose shareholders include Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy, "dropped plans for a London initial public offering, citing challenging market conditions" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 11/3).
