Scottish Rugby Union To Propose Murrayfield As Venue For Int'l Football Matches

Scottish Rugby Union COO Dominic McKay said that Murrayfield "could help grow Scottish football's audience," according to the BBC. The rugby body will "make a presentation to the Scottish FA" proposing the stadium as a venue for football internationals and cup games. Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian is currently using Murrayfield, which hosts Scotland and Edinburgh rugby matches, for home games while Tynecastle is being redeveloped. McKay: "We think we've got a very special stadium. We've been given the opportunity by our friends at the SFA to put our best foot forward and bid for major events and those major events include Scottish international games but they also include cup finals and semifinals" (BBC, 10/28). In Glasgow, Gordon Waddell reported the SRU "revealed details of a bid to bring Scotland’s football business to Murrayfield," which could spell the end of Hampden as the country's int'l home. The SFA’s lease for the Glasgow ground expires after it hosts the Euro 2020 final. But with "only a 20-year option to stay on the table," it has "invited interest from alternatives, calling the plan to leave the historic home behind Project Bright" (Scotland DAILY RECORD, 10/29).
