ANTHONY JOSHUA was named the boxer of the year at the British Boxing Board of Control's awards dinner in London. The IBF and WBA heavyweight champion was recognized for his achievements for the 12 months from Aug. '16, in which he successfully defended his IBF title against ÉRIC MOLINA before defeating WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO (London TELEGRAPH, 9/30). ... GEMMA MCCAW confirmed her retirement from int'l field hockey. McCaw, who is the third-most capped women's player with 246 tests, had not played for New Zealand since the Rio Olympic Games "after taking time away from the national squad." While she played for Midlands in the recent National Hockey League, she announced Sunday that "her time with the Black Sticks has come to an end" (NEW ZEALAND HERALD, 10/1).
