League Notes: Formula 1 Execs Under Pressure To Change Rules After Italian GP

Formula 1 execs are "under pressure" to scrap their rulebook after Lewis Hamilton emerged the winner form a "farcical" Italian Grand Prix. Hamilton "cantered to an easy victory," while Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel "rescued third place from the pre-race shambles that confused fans and pundits." Minutes before the start, drivers and teams were "unsure where their cars were supposed to line up after race officials imposed an avalanche of grid penalties for changing engine components." Nine drivers were hit with a total of 150 places, with McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne being sent back 65 places -- "impossible" in a field of 20 cars. The result was "total confusion as the grid placements changed throughout the morning" (London EVENING STANDARD, 9/4).

The England & Wales Cricket Board is "planning to start a Test match on a Saturday" for the first time since '55. A draft schedule for next summer has a "planned Saturday start for the Trent Bridge Test against India, which is likely to be the last of the five-Test series in August and September." Tests starting on a Saturday "were the norm" in the period between the two World Wars but the most recent time it happened was when England played South Africa at The Oval in Aug. '55 (LONDON TIMES, 9/4).

British-Pakistani boxer Amir Khan announced the formation of the Super Boxing League on Monday. Khan said, "I have taken the idea from my partner who is from India. He formed this league in India, so I decided to bring the league here to Pakistan." Khan said that "eight teams, also including women boxers, from across Pakistan would participate in the league which will hold fights under the World Boxing Council" (DAWN, 9/4).
