Worcester Warriors Put Up For Sale, Former Saracens CEO Reportedly Interested

Premiership rugby side Worcester Warriors has been "put up for sale," and former Saracens CEO Ed Griffiths is "believed to be interested in forming a consortium to buy the struggling club," according to Alex Lowe of the LONDON TIMES. Sixways Holdings Ltd. has funded the club since Cecil Duckworth "took a step back" in '13, but its director on the Worcester board, Greg Allen, is understood to "no longer be prepared to subsidise losses" that are expected to amount to £16M ($20.7M) for the past three financial years. A group of four prospective buyers or backers was reportedly shown around the club last week and it has been claimed that "if Griffiths does get involved then he will open up offices in London to help to build the club commercially." Sixways Holdings promised a cash investment in '14 and Dean Ryan was brought in as director of rugby. But he left the club last year after a disagreement with the board. In January, Worcester recruited Gary Gold as director of rugby and he "guided the club to safety on the pitch" while Griffiths, who has "gone freelance since leaving Saracens" in '15, was brought in as a consultant to oversee a review of the club (LONDON TIMES, 9/4).
