Liverpool 2022 Commonwealth Games Could Generate £1B, Study Finds

The 2022 Commonwealth Games could deliver a £1B ($1.29B) "economic boost" for Liverpool and the wider U.K. economy, research revealed, according to Richard Bell of BDAILY. A new study carried out by Deloitte, a supporter of the city's bid to host the Games, estimated that around £110M ($142.2M) "could be generated in the build-up to the competition through increases in tourism and associated construction work." Deloitte's findings also claimed that visitor spend during the Games on hotels, hospitality, retail and travel in the region could generate £60M ($77.6M) in additional economic activity. Legacy benefits for the city, "chiefly in the five years following the competition," could account for £750M ($969.5M) and a further £120M ($155.1M) shared across the U.K., according to the study (BDAILY, 8/31).
