ManU midfielder JUAN MATA pledged to donate 1% of his salary to charity and has "called for other professionals to do the same." The 29-year-old said that he would "donate the money to Common Goal," run by streetfootballworld, which supports football charities worldwide. Mata, who reportedly earns £7M ($9M) annually, said, "I am leading this effort, but I don't want to be alone" (BBC, 8/4). ... British heavyweight boxer ANTHONY JOSHUA has been ordered by the World Boxing Association to defend his title against Cuba's LUIS ORTIZ. The 27-year-old had been "due to face" WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO in a rematch before the Ukrainian retired on Thursday. The WBA said that Joshua and Ortiz have 30 days from Aug. 3 to agree to the fight (BBC, 8/4). ... An Indian boxer won a title fight against a Chinese opponent "before offering to hand back the prize as a gesture of peace between the two nations which are locked in a territorial dispute in the Himalayas." VIJENDER SINGH beat ZULPIKAR MAIMAITIALI on points on Saturday to retain his WBO Asia Pacific super middleweight title and take his opponent’s WBO Oriental super middleweight belt. After the unanimous verdict in Mumbai, Singh hugged Bollywood actor AMITABH BACHCHAN and other celebrities "before returning to the ring," taking the microphone and saying, "I don’t want this title. I will give it back to Zulpikar" (London GUARDIAN, 8/5). ... Cricketer JAMES ANDERSON bowled "from an end named after him" in the fourth Test against South Africa at Old Trafford on Friday. Lancashire County Cricket Club "decided to rename the Pavilion End after the fast bowler from Burnley whose 480 Test wickets are a record for England." Anderson said, "I'm blown away, really, by the gesture from the club" (LONDON TIMES, 8/4). ... FIBA announced FIBA Americas Secretary General Emeritus JENARO MARCHAND died, aged 82. He was an emblematic figure of basketball in Puerto Rico and across the Americas for more than half a century. He had been a player, referee, team owner, president of the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation, president of FIBA Americas, FIBA VP and secretary general of FIBA Americas (FIBA). ... Former Essex County Cricket Club captain, Chair and President DOUG INSOLE died, aged 91. Insole made 450 first-class appearances, scoring 25,241 runs (BBC, 8/6). ... Dual weight world champion TIMOTHY BRADLEY announced that he is retiring from boxing. The 33-year-old confirmed his decision on Saturday night in a short statement, saying, "I hope to continue to allow boxing in my world through teaching, commentating and being a fan of a sport I love so dearly" (London INDEPENDENT, 8/6).
