Tokyo 2020 Closes Security Blind Spots Involving High-Rise Condominiums

With the 2020 Olympics taking place in three years' time, host Tokyo has "begun to close security blind spots involving high-rise condominium buildings standing at the city's waterfront," where many Olympic and Paralympic Games are to be held, according to Keiji Okada of KYODO. There are "a number of condo buildings with 50 or more stories overlooking Tokyo Bay." Tsukishima Police Station Deputy Head Tetsuya Katsuta said, "There's a risk that criminals could obtain access to those buildings. By taking advantage of the security systems, they could set up a hideout inside." Twenty-five luxury condo buildings "stand close together in the district." To "eradicate the risk of terrorists taking advantage of those buildings," Tsukishima police station "took a new step in April, signing an agreement with the residents' association of Kachidoki the Tower" so police officers can patrol inside (KYODO, 8/6).
