League Notes: Athletics Execs Back Off Plans To Scrap World Records Set Before '05

Athletics execs have been "forced into a climbdown" over plans to scrap world records set before '05 "following backlash from the likes of Paula Radcliffe, Jonathan Edwards and Colin Jackson." The British trio were "among those who faced their achievements being expunged from the history books under controversial proposals put forward by European Athletics in May following the Russian doping scandal." Amid legal threats from others who would also be affected, all three "now look set to retain those marks under new proposals that would see the cut-off date for the scrapping of records moved back" to '91 (London TELEGRAPH, 8/2).

The "crisis" at the top of the Int'l Boxing Association (AIBA) "intensified" with those seeking to remove President Wu Ching-kuo saying that "they want him impeached for financial mismanagement." Members of AIBA's interim management committee also went to the Swiss courts on Wednesday to argue the case that the committee "should run the organization during the next three months, before an extraordinary congress decides the Taiwanese’s fate" (London GUARDIAN, 8/1).

The thickness of Formula 1's halo cockpit protection device could be reduced as the FIA plans to "see how much we can push" the design. It will be mandatory for teams to run the halo from '18. The criticism of the halo is "mainly for aesthetic reasons," although Race Dir Charlie Whiting said that he "expected the visual appeal to improve" when the design was finalized (AUTOSPORT, 8/2).
