Football Notes: UEFA Charges Linfield, Celtic After Champions League Violence

UEFA announced Irish side Linfield and Scottish side Celtic have been charged "after violent scenes at last week's Champions League match in Belfast." Linfield has been charged after its fans "threw objects on to the pitch and invaded the playing area at the end of the 2-0 defeat in the second-round first-leg qualifier." Celtic faces an "improper conduct charge for receiving five yellow cards." Police in full riot gear, backed up with dogs, "ended the Belfast game on the pitch keeping rival fans apart" (REUTERS, 7/17).

The Korea FA announced the number of registered footballers in South Korea "surpassed the 100,000 mark." The KFA said that the 100,000th player -- an elementary school student -- was registered in its database last Friday. The number of registered footballers has "more than tripled from a year earlier." Such a "rapid hike" is due to last year's merger with the Korea Soccer Association of Sport for All (YONHAP, 7/17).

Senegal Premier League side Ouakam was suspended by Senegal's Football Federation (FSF) "following a stampede which resulted in the deaths of eight fans." Nearly 100 other spectators were injured as Ouakam fans "clashed" with those of rival Stade de Mbour during Saturday's League Cup final (BBC, 7/17).
