Former National League side Sutton United goalkeeper WAYNE SHAW was charged with "breaching betting rules after eating a pie live on television." Shaw, who was forced to resign after being filmed eating what he said was "a pasty" during his side’s FA Cup defeat to Arsenal, faces punishment for "intentionally influencing a football betting market, and improper conduct." He was given until 6pm Friday to respond to the FA charges (London TELEGRAPH, 7/14). ... Hundreds of fans of Dutch side Ajax "staged an emotional rally" outside the family home of a ABDELHAK NOURI, who suffered brain damage after collapsing in a friendly match. The club said that the midfielder suffered "serious and permanent brain damage" (BBC, 7/15). ... All Blacks vice captain BEN SMITH is "expected to sit out eight tests this year." He re-signed with New Zealand Rugby in February through '20 and, "like many leading players, had a sabbatical clause included in his contract" (NEW ZEALAND HERALD, 7/16).

DISMISSED: A court in Brazil dismissed charges against U.S. swimmer RYAN LOCHTE "relating to false robbery claims he made at the Rio Olympics." Lochte, 32, told a TV interview that he and three other members of the U.S. swimming team had been "robbed at gunpoint at a petrol station." He was charged with "making a false statement and banned from swimming" (BBC, 7/16).
