Boca Juniors Will Expand Current Stadium Instead Of Building A New One

Argentine first division side Boca Juniors on Monday reached an agreement "that sets to the side any initiative related to a new stadium," according to Marcelo Guerrero of CLARÍN. Club President Daniel Angelici "had previously admitted that a project that would cost more than $300M would not be viable." Boca Juniors VP Royco Ferrari said, "We all want a bigger Bombonera in the place where it has always been. We signed an agreement to work together on expanding the stadium" (CLARÍN, 7/11). INFOBAE reported the heads of 14 of the 15 member groups recognized by Boca Juniors met with Angelici and other club execs "and decided to rule out building a new stadium for now, and proceed with renovations to the existing stadium." Sources said that the purpose of the meeting was to reach "a compromise for the Bombonera." The club will "now carry out an exhaustive survey of the 183 properties surrounding the stadium." The results will show "the neighbors' willingness to sell their homes, and if so, the value of the properties and the economic viability of the investment will be determined by October" (INFOBAE, 7/12).
