League Notes: Coroner Recommends Significant Changes To Combat Sports

A coroner "recommended significant changes to the way combat sports are administered" in NSW after finding that the '15 death of boxer Davey Browne was "preventable." Browne, 28, died three days after he was knocked out by Filipino fighter Carlo Magali. Deputy State Coroner Teresa O'Sullivan on Thursday found that Browne died as a result of a large right acute subdural hematoma, from the final blow he sustained in that fight, owing to his "impaired condition" going into the final round, which "diminished his ability to defend himself or control his head movements" (London GUARDIAN, 6/22).

Abu Dhabi Sports Council acting Cricket CEO Matthew James Boucher "hopes to rebrand the game in the capital." A new logo called "Abu Dhabi Cricket" has been created "with the focus on developing the landscape around the Shaikh Zayed Cricket Stadium into a multi-sports venue." Boucher will also "make sure the venue turns into a money spinner and there is more community involvement" (GULF NEWS, 6/21).

Indian police dropped sedition charges against 15 Muslim men arrested for allegedly shouting "anti-India and pro-Pakistan" slogans during the Int'l Cricket Council Champions Trophy final. Police in Madhya Pradesh state said that sedition was "hard to prove." The men have been charged with "disturbing communal harmony" instead (BBC, 6/22).
