The IOC will discuss a report on the possibility of awarding the 2024 and the 2028 Games "at the same time a month earlier than expected," it said on Friday. Paris and L.A. are the only two cities left in the race for the 2024 Games and the IOC is "eager to see no losers in this competition as four other cities dropped out." The IOC will discuss the report by its working group during an exec board meeting set for June 9 (REUTERS, 5/19).
The Tokyo government began studying ways "to curb traffic congestion" during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, including "promoting staggered work hours and teleworking." To "drastically reduce traffic volume," the government will "consider seeking the cooperation of companies around the venues and recommending people vary their commuting hours, work at home, and take summer vacations during the event" (KYODO, 5/19).
Some of the medals handed out at the Rio 2016 Games "have begun to flake apart and need replacing," according to Rio 2016 Communications Dir Mario Andrada. He said, "We're seeing problems with the covering on between 6% and 7% of the medals." An estimated 2,021 medals were handed out to competitors at the Games last summer. The problem is "mainly with silver medals" (BBC, 5/19).
