Opponents Of Aberdeen's New Stadium Fear Crowd Trouble At Big Matches

Campaigners against Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen's proposed move to a new £50M ($64.5M) stadium "fear football violence could blight their streets on big match days," according to the Scotland DAILY RECORD. The "No Kingsford Stadium" organization voiced concerns that major games against the likes of Rangers and Celtic could "turn nasty outside the ground." Aberdeen will find out next month whether its proposal for the Kingsford/Westhill area of the city "gets the green light." The Scottish Professional Football League and Scottish FA have "backed the plans." But local campaigners "objected over parking and greenbelt issues." Now they have "raised fears that a lack of segregation and supporter management strategy could lead to unwanted scenes on their doorstep." Group spokesperson Alistair McKelvie said, "We haven’t seen any plans in terms of segregation and fan management and that’s a worry for football supporters as well as the residents of Westhill. ... If the area is policed effectively with CCTV and a police presence, any potential problems should be managed, but there has been no indication that will be the case" (DAILY RECORD, 5/4).
