Event Notes: New EFL Trophy Format 'Worth Doing' Insists CEO Shaun Harvey

The EFL Trophy "does have a future" in its revamped format, according to EFL CEO Shaun Harvey. The EFL was criticized "heavily" after teams from the Premier League and Championship with Category One academies were invited to compete. Harvey said that the "pilot" was "certainly worth doing" (BBC, 3/28).

Thailand is set to get a place on the 2018 MotoGP calendar, "with the Buriram circuit joining an expanded 19-round schedule." The Hermann Tilke-designed facility has "agreed a two-year deal with championship promoter Dorna Sports, with an option to extend it to a third." It was "originally meant to hold its first MotoGP event" in '17, but "complications" involving the track’s title sponsor, Chang beer, and Dorna's deal with brewer Singha "caused a delay" (MOTORSPORT, 3/29).

More than 2,000 people "applied for the Glasgow 2018 volunteer team in the first 24 hours." Glasgow 2018 European Championships organizers said that "they are overwhelmed by the public response." Applications have "come from all over Scotland and across the globe," including Australia, India, Belarus, Ghana, Italy, Jamaica, Germany and the U.S. (SCOTSMAN, 3/28).
