Esports Attracting More Online Viewers Than Traditional Sports In Sweden

Streamed esports is "becoming increasingly popular in Sweden," where daily online viewing of esports was -- "for the first time ever -- larger than that of traditional sports during this year's second quarter," according to Robert Briel of BROADBAND TV NEWS. There is "no doubt that consumer interest in esports is growing rapidly." The global esports audience was estimated to be close to 230 million in '15, according to analysis company Newzoo. The same source calculated global esports revenue at $325M last year. Just like in traditional sports, "revenues are mainly derived from rights, events, and advertisement." In Sweden, MTG in particular has targeted the esports market over the last years, "hoping to capitalize on the increasing demand." Mediavision notes that viewing of esports "is on the rise also in Sweden." For this year’s second quarter, the share of daily online viewers that watched esports or gaming grew to 12%, "corresponding to five percent of the entire population." The interest for esports is "largest among the young." In the group 15-34-year-olds, one in five of daily online TV viewers watched esports, "twice as many as those who watch traditional sports on the web" (BROADBAND TV NEWS, 9/7).
