Good Governance Could Help NRL Side Parramatta Claw Back Part Of A$1M Fine

National Rugby League side Parramatta is in line to have some of its A$1M ($760,500) fine returned "if the club follows through with key changes to accountability and transparency," according to Margie McDonald THE AUSTRALIAN. If some of the A$1M fine imposed on July 9 as part of the NRL’s sanctions against the club for salary cap rorting is suspended, it "is separate from the current legal appeal by the Eels." The club’s new three-man interim board "is sifting through two sets of legal advice to see if there is a viable case for having some of the penalties rescinded at the NRL Appeals Tribunal." But if the interim board is able to drive through the changes to the Eels business structure, it "may not have to pay the full" A$1M. Originally, A$250,000 ($190,000) "was to be suspended pending the club’s co-operation on reforms." An NRL spokesperson said, "We are talking to the Eels in regards to governance reforms. That may involve a suspension of part of the fine but nothing has been determined yet" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 8/3).
