Military Intelligence Head Says French Athletes Targeted For Planned Terror Attack In Rio

French Military Intelligence (DRM) Head General Christope Gomart announced that France was “informed of a planned terror attack” against its athletes at the Rio Games, according to the AFP. Gomart described the planned attack in May to a parliamentary commission on the Nov. ’15 Paris attacks, “of which the transcript has now been made public.” When asked how the DRM learned of the planned attack, Gomart replied, “Through our partners.” French authorities have not given any more information. Close to 85,000 security officials -- 47,000 police and 38,000 military members -- will be mobilized to “assure the safety of the 10,500 athletes as well as the officials, journalists and tourists” for the Games from Aug. 5-21 (AFP, 7/13). The BBC reported a Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN) spokesperson said, “We were not the source of information and the Brazilian intelligence agency was not officially informed either of this matter." On Tuesday, the Brazilian government said that it was "releasing additional funding to beef up security ahead of the Olympics.” Brazil Sports Minister Leonardo Picciani said that the armed forces would get an extra $24M “to help them meet security needs” (BBC, 7/14).
