Former Edinburgh South MP Nigel Griffiths was exposed "as a hypocrite who offered to help" promoted Scottish Championship side Rangers players "dodge tax just months after standing down from parliament." Griffiths "traded on his political connections" to secure a meeting with "shamed" Owner Craig Whyte to tout an alternative to the EBT system which "brought the club to the brink of ruin." As well as the plan for the rich "to put their earnings in a 'trust' Griffiths, the former deputy leader of the House of Commons, also promised to provide extras such as top QCs to fight off the taxman in court should the need arise." He claims he was mounting a one-man "undercover sting" operation when he made the offer to the beleaguered club in '11 -- "despite being unable to provide a shred of documentary evidence" (Scotland DAILY RECORD, 5/16).
