Football Notes: Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko Set To Become RFU President

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko "is set to become president of the Russian Football Union after his only rival for the position, vice-speaker of the Russian State Duma Igor Lebedev, withdrew from next month's vote on Friday." Lebedev: "Today we met with Mutko and we offered each other our mutual support." Also on Friday, Mutko said that Russia "will name either Leonid Slutski or Alexander Borodyuk as the new coach of the national football team" (REUTERS, 7/31). ... The Court of Appeals Council in Greece announced on Wednesday that 85 people "will be tried for crimes connected to Greek football match fixing." Investigations into match-fixing in Greece began after UEFA "had published a report that found 41 games of the 2009-2010 season were potentially fixed" (GREEK REPORTER, 7/30).
