New BBVA Bancomer Stadium In Monterrey Opens On Sunday With Friendly Against Benfica

BBVA Bancomer Stadium, the new home of LigaMX side Club Monterrey, opens Sunday with a friendly against Benfica of Portugal. The $200M stadium, designed by Populous, is the most expensive facility built in Mexico and its amenities are on par with NFL facilities, according to project officials. Privately financed by Femsa, the club's owner, the stadium has 324 suites and 4,500 club seats. The technology includes two HD video boards, 900 TV monitors and a distributed antenna system to boost cellphone coverage. The facility "will basically revolutionize the way people perceive and experience a soccer match in Mexico and Latin America," David Lizarraga, a senior associate with Populous, told SportsBusiness Journal earlier this summer. Lizarraga, who worked on the project, is a native of Mexico and studied architecture in Monterrey.
