IOC honorary member LEO WALLNER died in Austria at the age of 79. Wallner joined the IOC in '98 and became an honorary member last year. He was a member of the Finance Commission ('00-14), Audit Committee ('06-12) and the Ethics Commission ('09-12). Wallner was actively involved in the development of sport in Austria, first as VP of the Austrian Sports Aid Foundation ('81-09) and as president ('90-09) then board member of the Austrian National Olympic Committee (IOC). ... Former BBC racing commentator PETER O'SULLEVAN -- dubbed the "Voice of Racing" -- "died at home in London after a long illness, aged 97." An "icon in the sport," he commentated on 50 Grand Nationals and around 14,000 races before retiring in '97. In '97, "he set up a charitable trust which has since raised huge amounts for animal and racing-related charities." NIGEL PAYNE, CEO of that charitable trust, said, "Sir Peter died earlier this afternoon, very peacefully, at home. Sir Peter was one of the greatest men I've ever known. Only last week he was talking about what he wanted me to do for the trust in the future. He was still very alert. It's a sad day" (BBC, 7/29). ... Honda Racing has apologized to CASEY STONER "for a throttle malfunction which left the former MotoGP world champion with a broken shoulder blade and tibia" (BBC, 7/29).
