Olympic Notes: British IOC VP Reedie Says L.A. Should Step In As U.S. Bid For '24

British IOC VP Craig Reedie said that L.A. "should step in as the United States' bid for the 2024 Olympics to replace Boston." Reedie believes L.A.'s existing stadium and sports facilities "would make it a strong bid -- and a relatively cheap one." Reedie: "One of the advantages that Los Angeles has is that the Coliseum is perhaps the one big stadium in America that has a running track. It may need a bit of refurbishment but it is cheaper and more cost effective" (London DAILY MAIL, 7/28). ... IOC President Thomas Bach said that cleaning up the polluted bay where sailing and windsurfing competitions will be held at Rio 2016 "remains a serious challenge." Sailors in Guanabara Bay "have reported seeing pollution including furniture and floating animal carcasses." Bach said that Games preparations "were on track" but challenges remained, "first of all the cleaning of the bay" (BBC, 7/29).
