BCCI Rules Out Resumption Of India-Pakistan Cricket Ties After Gurdaspur Terror Attack

The Board of Control for Cricket in India "appeared to rule out an immediate resumption of India-Pakistan cricket ties in the wake of Gurdaspur terror attack, in which militants from across the border are believed to be involved," according to ONE INDIA. There "were talks about resumption of bilateral cricket ties between the two nations at the end of this year but BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur said that it may not be possible under such circumstances." Thakur said that "it was not a possibility now." Thakur: "We were talking on those lines but when you see such attack on India time and again, the Jammu region, now the Punjab, where Indians are losing their lives, as an Indian I don't see a possibility to that." The Hamirpur MP "condemned the terror attack in Gurdaspur, where six persons were killed, including an SP." India has "not played a full bilateral Test series with Pakistan after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks which led to suspension of cricketing ties between the two countries" (ONE INDIA, 7/27). In Mumbai, Indranil Basu wrote the BCCI "has made it clear that India are not against playing cricket against Pakistan, but that to do so a peaceful atmosphere was required." Thakur said, "We have certain issues between the boards and our country also has issues. We need to sort them out before playing cricket against Pakistan. I met the PCB [Pakistan Cricket Board] representatives during the ICC [Int'l Cricket Council] meetings in Barbados. The board is not against having dialogue, but the security of the country is paramount" (TIMES OF INDIA, 7/27).
