In order to grow its int'l reputation ahead of its 2024 Olympics bid, Hamburg "wants to host a minimum of five world championships," according to Rainer Grünberg of the HAMBURGER ABENDBLATT. German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB) President Alfons Hörmann said, "The [Olympic] bid concept is unique. But we have to bring Hamburg closer to int'l sports federations and IOC members." However, due to the fact that the IOC ethics code prohibits inviting IOC officials, Hamburg "wants to communicate its advantages through an increased number of int'l sporting events over the next several years." Hamburg Sports Federation (HSB) President Jürgen Mantell said, "We won't engage in a bidding war and don't perform hara-kiri. Everything we do has to be politically and financially viable and as sustainable as possible." The city is in the running to host the 2019 Rowing World Championships. It has also bid to host the semifinals and final of the 2017 World Women's Handball Championship. The 2019 World Men's Handball Championship, which will be co-hosted by Denmark and Germany, is also on Hamburg's radar. The city's most recent bids are for the World Amateur Boxing Championships in '17 and the World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in '18 (HAMBURGER ABENDBLATT, 7/16).
