Globo Licenses Brazilian Football Broadcast Rights To Spain-Based Mediapro

Brazilian TV company Rede Globo "has licensed" to Spanish-based Mediapro int'l distribution rights to Brazil’s two main football championships, Brasileiro and São Paulo State League, according to Emiliano De Pablos of VARIETY. The deal "will allow Mediapro to sell and distribute the TV signal of Brazilian soccer matches in key territories such as Europe and Asia" through '19. Mediapro will offer at least 153 matches per season, "three every match day, plus highlights and the specialized program 'Footbrazil,' dealing with both competitions." Globo "will retain the rights in the American continent, where it exploits them directly." A Mediapro source said, "This is the first time that Rede Globo relies on an international agent to sell its soccer media rights, and we believe it is a significant event." Rede Globo, Latin America’s largest media conglom, "produces over 500 hours a year of output sports content" (VARIETY, 7/15).
