Scottish Championship Side Rangers Board Holds Talks Over Potential Group Merger

Scottish Championship side Rangers' board has held discussions with "several supporters groups" over a proposal that would bring together the various organizations under one umbrella, according to Christopher Jack of the HERALD SCOTLAND. Rangers Dir John Gilligan and recently appointed Managing Dir Stewart Robertson met with fan representatives last month and "a consensus has been reached that could see the Rangers Supporters Trust, Rangers Supporters Assembly, Rangers Supporters Association, Rangers First and Rangers Fans Board come together rather than continue to work as separate bodies." The proposed new organization would have two representatives from Rangers on board "but would be independent from the club and be in a position to buy shares," contribute toward capital expenditure projects and comment on issues in public. Further discussions are set to take place later this month "as the details of the blueprint are fine tuned but the groups have already started gathering feedback from their members over the idea" (HERALD SCOTLAND, 7/7). The Scotland DAILY RECORD reported the long-running legal fight over the legality of Employee Benefit Trusts used by Rangers "returned to Scotland's highest court" on Tuesday. Three senior judges in the Court of Session in Edinburgh have been hearing an appeal by U.K. tax authority HMRC to the original decision in the so-called "big tax case." The hearing is "expected to last four days" (DAILY RECORD, 7/7).
