Wozniacki Gripes About Wimbledon Schedule, As Women Get Fewer Matches On Main Courts

Tennis player Caroline Wozniacki "accused Wimbledon officials of sexism" on Monday when she claimed that women "do not receive as many chances as men to feature on the larger courts," according to Brown & Swerling of the LONDON TIMES. After being defeated "in a partly empty No 2 Court, the Danish player demanded that as many women as male players should feature on the two main courts." Twice as many men's singles matches "have been scheduled on the two largest courts -- Centre Court and No 1 Court -- since the championships began." Wozniacki: "The women really haven't gotten the opportunity here to play on the big courts. You only get one women's match on court one and Centre Court." The All England Club said that the schedules "were the responsibility of the referee's office and that last year 19 men and 16 women played on Centre Court." Officials at the AEC said that crowds on the court and TV viewers "expect the 'marquee players' to appear on the two major courts" (LONDON TIMES, 7/7). In Sydney, Danielle Rendina reported scheduling at Wimbledon "has been fairly consistent this year." On Monday, two men's singles matches, as well as Wozniacki's, "were played on Court Two," and the same ratio "applied on Centre Court and Court One, as it did most days in the opening week." Court Two, while lacking the capacity of the main two courts, "is a mini-stadium with 4,000 reserved seats." Centre Court "has 15,000 and Court One more than 11,000" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 7/7).
