Media Notes: Barcelona Cedes Operation Of Barça TV To Telefónica

Starting Wednesday at noon local time Barcelona will cede the running of the club's official channel Barça TV to Telefónica for the next four seasons. The agreement sees the club maintain the channel's official status and editorial control over its contents. The most significant change will be the move to broadcasting in HD. Barça TV will continue to be able to be seen via the same distribution channels as now, including free-to-air TDT broadcasting within Catalonia (Barcelona). ... The BBC's revamped Wimbledon highlights show was "subjected to stinging attacks from viewers after its first broadcast" on Monday. The corporation has "ditched its traditional format for the daily highlights package called 'Wimbledon 2day'" for a more interactive approach. The format did not "appear to sit well with viewers, who criticised the BBC for 'dumbing down' its coverage" (London TELEGRAPH, 6/30). ... Boxer Carl Frampton will "continue to build his following on terrestrial television in Britain next month" even as he makes his "first assault" on the U.S. boxing market. ITV will screen his defense of his super-bantamweight title against Mexican Alejandro González Jr. in El Paso, Tex., on July 18 (London DAILY MAIL, 6/30).
