South Korean Baseball Attendance Down In June Amid MERS Scare

Data showed that the monthly attendance numbers in the top South Korean baseball league were "down in June from the previous month amid jitters over Middle East Respiratory Syndrome," according to YONHAP. The Korea Baseball Organization said that the average per-game attendance in June was 8,250, "down from 12,716 in May." Through Sunday, 362 out of the 720 games this season had been played, with 3.78 million fans going to KBO games, "down from 3.9 million fans after 362 games" in '14. The monthly drop in attendance in the nation’s most popular sport "coincided with the MERS scare that has affected the business and tourism sectors as well." The Doosan Bears and the LG Twins, which share Seoul's Jamsil Stadium as their home and which typically rank among the most popular clubs, had "trouble drawing crowds in May, and they suffered even bigger losses in June." The Bears saw their May attendance down 6% compared with a year ago, while the Twins "had an annual drop" of 9% in May. For June, the Bears had a 15% drop, while the Twins "experienced" an 11% fall (YONHAP, 6/30).
