British Open To Offer Record $1.8M In Prize Money For Winner

British Open organizers said on Wednesday that this year's winner will collect a record £1.15M ($1.8M) in prize money, according to Mike Collett of REUTERS. The purse is £175,000 ($274,600) up on last year's tournament, won by Rory McIlroy, with the overall prize fund rising to £6.3M ($9.9M), up £900,000 ($1.4B) on '14. The runner-up will pocket £653,000 ($1.02B), with the third-placed finisher taking home £420,000 ($659,100). Royal & Ancient CEO Peter Dawson said, "The Open is one of the world's preeminent sporting events. The Championship represents the pinnacle for the world's greatest golfers and this increase is appropriate for an event with The Open's global appeal" (REUTERS, 6/24).
