Marco Polo Del Nero To Present Clubs' And CBF's Governing Changes At General Assembly

Brasileiro Série A clubs "took advantage of the crisis" at the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) and "enabled the creation of a league independent from the body," according to Sérgio Rangel of FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO. In a meeting on Monday, CBF President Marco Polo Del Nero "fell under pressure" from club presidents and will present on Thursday an "amendment to the statute to remove the body's power" over the Campeonato Brasileiro. Should the measure be approved, clubs will "decide everything about the tournament -- define the bracket, formulate the competition, access, referees and even ticket prices, among other things." Brasileiro side Vasco President Eurico Miranda said, "We've always fought for this. Now we're going to wait for approval." On the other hand, club presidents left CBF HQ "supporting Del Nero's permanence in the position" (FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO, 6/8). LANCENET's Igor Siqueira wrote after many years of "resistance, the CBF said it wants to disseminate the culture of limiting power" of federations that control football in Brazil. CBF Secretary General Walter Feldman said, "Yes. We're going to change. This will be discussed after Thursday. The idea is to create a pyramid in Brazilian football. It can't be demanded because each federation has its own structure. But it will be a strong recommendation" (LANCENET, 6/9).

VERY EXCLUSIVE: In São Paulo, Silvio Barsetti wrote football player movement Bom Senso leader Paulo André's presence at Monday's CBF meeting "caused protests" from Santos President Modesto Roma Jr., who "removed himself from the meeting." Roma Jr.: "I came to a discussion with the clubs and I do not accept other groups or bodies." Roma Jr. "emphasized that he defends formal club meetings." Despite the incident, Paulo André was "considered very valuable in the meeting." Bahia President Marcelo Santana said, "For the beginning of the meeting, it was great. We're going to have new meetings [with him]." Paulo André "spoke of Bom Senso's official request" for Del Nero's resignation. He said, "Since the reports of corruption cases that directly involve the CBF, he has become politically weakened and his management morally contaminated" (TERRA, 6/9).

FURTHER PUSH: UOL's Mattos & Konchinski wrote Del Nero "already has a plan to convince" the Brazilian congress that the CBF is "sworn to better its management of national football." Del Nero on Tuesday "presented a reform project 'Fifa style' that he says has been in place since he took over the presidency" in April. Feldman said that "weakness will not happen" at the CBF. Feldman: "We're committed to make profound changes not just in CBF management but also in football. All of these types of changes are difficult, but management is committed to these" (UOL, 6/9).
