League Notes: Zimbabwe Cricket Chair Declares Pakistani Matches 'Safe'

Zimbabwe Cricket Chair Wilson Manase has "declared Pakistan safe for international cricket after two matches of their five-game tour and urged Test-playing nations to revisit their decision to shun the troubled country." Manase said that he was "given the green light for the tour from Zimbabwe defence officials and was happy with the tight security laid on after both Twenty20 internationals passed without trouble." Manase: "We need to encourage members of the ICC [Int'l Cricket Coucil] to re-look at the position of not visiting Pakistan, and if they are watching how things have gone, they would realize that Pakistan, in the quest to have teams visit, have done great work to create an environment where cricket can be played safely" (London GUARDIAN, 5/26). ... Leading Australian trainer David Hayes will "formally approach Racing Victoria in coming weeks in a bid to have the Werribee quarantine station opened earlier this year so overseas horses can compete in early spring races." Hayes believes that if the opening date, which is usually the first week in October, can be "moved back a month it could enhance the chances of international horses competing in early spring" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 5/26).
