CONMEBOL Rejects Boca Juniors' Appeal Of Expulsion From Copa Libertadores

CONMEBOL said on Tuesday that Argentine first division side Boca Juniors' appeal against its expulsion from this year's Copa Libertadores "has been rejected," according to Andrew Downie of REUTERS. Boca Juniors was kicked out of the tournament after a fan "sprayed pepper in the faces of rival River Plate players at halftime" during a match last week. CONMEBOL said in a statement that it "rejects the appeal by Club Atletico Boca Juniors" (REUTERS, 5/19). In Buenos Aires, Marcelo Argüelles reported Boca Juniors President Daniel Angelici stepped down as VP of the Argentine FA. Angelici will remain the club's representative at the AFA, but "left his position as the body's second VP." AFA President Luis Segura said that it is "too early to think about Angelici's replacement as VP" (CLARÍN, 5/19). CLARÍN reported Adrián Napolitano, the man identified as the fan who sprayed River's players, "received an exemption from prison, meaning he will stay free as the court's criminal investigation is carried out." Napolitano "has been ordered to testify in court" (CLARÍN, 5/19).
