EPL side West Ham United is "planning to bring an important piece of history" with it when it leaves the Boleyn Ground at the end of next season to "honour their legendary" former Manager JOHN LYALL. The John Lyall gates will be "uprooted and relocated inside the club shop" at the 54,000-seater stadium on Queen Elizabeth Park. The gates, which stood outside the club's home since '56, were "renamed in Lyall's honour" in '09 after he died three years before, aged 66 (HERE IS THE CITY, 5/18). ... Three-time world figure skating champion MAO ASADA announced on Monday that she has "already started practicing under her coach's guidance in hopes of returning to competition after a year's break" (JAPAN TIMES, 5/18). ... Kenya rugby vice-captain COLLINS INJERA may have "left a costly mark on the London rugby sevens tournament" after celebrating his 200th int'l try by pulling a pen out of his sock and signing a TV camera. Media reports said the "exuberant player used a permanent marker on the lens," which cost around £60,000 ($94,000), after scoring in a 24-12 win over Japan at Twickenham on Sunday. It was "not clear who would pay for the damage" (REUTERS, 5/18). ... Former Sri Lanka cricket captain MAHELA JAYAWARDENE "has been approached for the proposed Legends’ T20 matches," promoted by former cricketers SACHIN TENDULKAR and SHANE WARNE to make inroads into the "untapped" U.S. market. A source close to Jayawardene "confirmed the development." The source said, "Yes, Mahela has been approached to play in the league promoted by Tendulkar and Warne. At this point I can only confirm about the offer being made but a few details still needs to be worked out" (PTI, 5/18).
