Spanish Grand Prix Expects To Draw Crowd Of 90,000 To 95,000 Despite Alonso's Struggles

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which will host F1's Spanish Grand Prix from Friday through Sunday, is expecting to draw a crowd of 90,000 to 95,000 fans, according to Jaime Martín of MARCA. The evolution "of the presence of fans at the track shows the effect" that Fernando Alonso has had, as the venue's biggest crowd was the 140,700 that turned out to see Alonso and Lewis Hamilton in '07, when they were both driving for McLaren. The following years showed that Spain's economic crisis "overcame fans' desire to see their local hero live." Now, though Alonso "has little chance to win, it is not altering fans' plans." Faithful fans "will continue to attend, but the economy will make the crowd more or less the same as last year" (MARCA, 5/6).
