Channel 5 To Show Football League Highlights In Prime-Time Saturday Slot

The Football League "struck a deal with Channel 5 to air a weekly highlights show in prime time on Saturday evenings," according to Mark Sweney of the London GUARDIAN. The deal, struck for the next three seasons, "marks the first time that Football League matches will be shown in prime time." Channel 5, which will air a weekly 90-minute show at 9pm starting next season, "takes over from the BBC which had aired highlights after Match of the Day, usually starting just before midnight and ending after 1am." Football League CEO Shaun Harvey said, "This is an exceptional opportunity for the Football League to work with a broadcaster that will schedule our matches in a prime-time slot. It will take our games to a wider, younger audience by giving us the chance to be first in front of fans on a Saturday night." ITN Productions "has won the multimillion-pound contract to film and produce 1,813 games from the Championship, League One and League Two" and will take over the contract from IMG (GUARDIAN, 5/5). The PA reported "The Football League Show" on BBC "will continue to be broadcast after Match of the Day next season, and is a further indication of the level of competition currently in the market for football broadcasting rights" (PA, 5/5). Channel 5 is in the process of tendering the contract to produce its highlights show and will announce its preferred program production partner in due course. ITN Productions will also produce digital clips and highlights content of the Football League's competitions for use by domestic broadcasters (Sky Sports & Channel 5), int'l broadcasters (through Pitch Int'l) and clubs (through their online Player service), as well as clips of Premier League matches for top flight clubs that are part of the League’s FLi network of club websites (Football League).
