FSV Mainz Exec Christian Heidel Calls For Expansion Of Bundesliga To 20 Teams

Bundesliga side FSV Mainz Manager Christian Heidel "has called for an expansion of the top flight," according to the SID. Heidel: "We consider increasing the number of teams to 20." Other European top leagues in Spain, England and Italy are proving that it is possible to schedule four additional matchdays in a season. Heidel: "More clubs also means more games and therefore higher revenue." The rise of clubs with big money behind them is another reason why Heidel calls for the expansion of the league. He said, "The number of those clubs is rising. However, the league has to live and needs the other teams and emotions" (SID, 5/3).
