Audit Into Spanish Football Federation's Accounts Leads To Questions

The accounts of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) "continue to generate tension" between RFEF President Ángel María Villar and Spanish Superior Sports Council (CSD) President Miguel Cardenal, according to LIBERTAD DIGITAL. There was a time when both directors "maintained a cordial relationship," but the relationship "became complicated when Cardenal decided to intervene in the accounts of the sports federations." The CSD ordered an "exhaustive audit with the aim of having an exact X-ray of each federation's economic situation." The audit carried out by BDO on behalf of the CSD "found significant irregularities in the analysis." The conflict was "aggravated by Villar refusing to allow government intervention in the accounts to avoid any irregularity coming to light." Among the "numerous questions that have not been answered regarding the report is the mysterious disappearance" of €350,000 ($375,700). The "reason has to do with a transaction involving foreign currency, but no further justification has been offered to explain the absence of this quantity" (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 4/22).
