New CONADE Director Addresses Cancellation Of 2017 FINA World Championships

Mexico National Commission for Physical Culture & Sport (CONADE) Dir Alfredo Castillo was last week named director of the body, replacing Jesús Mena, according to LA AFICIÓN. He discussed on Monday the cancellation of "what would have been the first Int'l Swimming Federation (FINA) Swimming World Championships ever held in Mexico" in '17. Castillo said that the event "would have left a positive economic impact, sufficient to have covered the spending necessary to host the event." He said, "For me, I say, I was not the director but it is unfortunate, because we were doing the comparative analysis and we were seeing that when Barcelona hosted the World Championships [in '13], they spent $100 million to do it, but the economic result left by the tourism and everything else was €280 million. ... You have to look at what, at that time, led the directors to have to reach a cancellation, but I can tell you that when representatives of 202 countries come to your country, plus coaches, athletes, hotels, expenses, food, lodging, projection, well it leaves you an impact." Castillo also "assured that under his management, the necessary measures will be taken so that something of this nature does not affect national sports and their future participation in and organization of world championships" (LA AFICIÓN, 4/20).
